Streamlined processes for new facilities

Nordex SE is a manufacturer of wind turbines, with production sites in Rostock (north-eastern Germany), China, and Jonesboro (USA). The company employs more than 2,400 staff at the various sites.

Project challenges

The management decided to convert the production method in Rostock to assembly line production. All the processes in the pre- and main assembly areas were organised in a pull-flow context, and the plant equipment was adapted accordingly. These processes also needed to be transferred to the simultaneously built factory in Jonesboro, USA, and additionally adapted to the local conditions, including customisation of the related workstations and equipment.

io consultants’ task was to plan the entire plant structure and layout for the Jonesboro plant and to carry out the overall project management of all internal and external factors related to the project. io consultants synchronised the workstations, specified the equipment necessary for the assembly line production, monitored the deliveries of all suppliers to the US site, and contributed to the process documentation for the US plant. The US Nordex team was involved in all planning activities, and was thus provided an interactive introduction and training to prepare them for their future tasks.

With the expertise of io-consultants in production, logistics, IT, and architecture, it was possible to comprehensively manage the entire planning phase and, especially, all the involved project groups. The US plant began standard operations according to plan despite the extremely tight schedule.
