Secure and efficient distribution of pharmaceuticals

Pfizer is the world’s largest research based biomedical and pharmaceutical company. The portfolio comprises a broad range of medicines for human health with related health care services as well as animal medicines and consumer goods.

Project challenges

The plant location Karlsruhe is the sole distribution centre for all products to the domestic German markets as well as for export of a number of special preparations. 70 employees currently work in the distribution centre in single shift operation. The picking volumes range from one pallet shipment down to individual packages. Major challenges are the functional requirements for storing and holding systems. To expand the logistics facilities, an existing production building required alterations.

io-consultants' task was to create an in-house logistics concept with reliable cost and time frames in as little time as possible, while maximising the storage and picking capacity in the present building. The alteration had to take place during running operation.

The second planning phase comprised the implementation of a fully automated high bay store with order picking zones for special pharmaceutical products. A conveyer bridge links the converted production hall with the new established, fully-automated high bay store and the various order picking areas. The new distribution centre supplies the entire domestic German market as well as the global market. Thanks to the modularised building concept the capacity can be increased at any time.

Customer value

According to the requirement for each pharmaceutical product, the zoning of the order picking can be created individually. Picking frequency, import/ export rate, security aspects etc. are taken into consideration. The order picking areas are equipped with various pallet racks, gravity flow racks and shelving systems in order to optimise access times.
