Groundbreaking ceremony at new MAN central logistics warehouse in Salzgitter
Heidelberg - 3.5.2016
MAN officially began the third phase of construction to expand its central aftermarket logistics warehouse in Salzgitter, on 3 May 2016. Once again, io-consultants deployed an interdisciplinary team of logistics planners and architects to assist the project.
“We already saw MAN through the first two construction phases, starting in 2008, with general planning services ranging from location scouting to final implementation,” says Rainer Diez, partner at io-consultants. MAN’s logistics centre in Salzgitter supplies spare parts for trucks, busses and engines to northern Germany and northern Europe, and in some cases as sea freight across the world. These aftermarket services – supplying the customer with spare parts as quickly as possible – have become a key business area for MAN. Diez continues: “Right from the beginning, the expansion plans for the Salzgitter site included both the newbuild and options to further extend warehouse space in the future." Since it opened on 12 March 2011, the logistics centre in Salzgitter, which has seen two further construction phases in the meantime, has played a vital role in MAN’s aftermarket logistics.
“Once this expansion stage is completed, all MAN aftermarket logistics services will be handled centrally from here in Salzgitter,” explains Ralf Kolshorn, head of MAN Parts Management. “This will significantly reduce the complexity of logistics processes and optimise aftermarket supplies to our customers.”
In this third construction phase, the Logistics Centre will grow by an additional 60,000 sqm to a total storage space of 172,000 sqm. Completion is scheduled for the beginning of 2017. The central warehouse in Dachau will be entirely relocated to Salzgitter as a part of organisational restructuring at the MAN Production Truck (PT) unit. To ensure seamless transition, the aftermarket business will be transferred successively from Dachau to Salzgitter over the next six months as construction work progresses. Besides being an important centre for component production and processing, the Salzgitter site will in future also be a major international MAN aftermarket parts supplier.
